Structure Of
Dental Implants
Dental implants consist of three units that come together to form a complete tooth.
Root
In dental implants, the root is made of titanium and placed in the jawbone. This metal is ideal because it fuses with bone to provide a long-term fulcrum.
Abutment
An abutment is a structure placed on top of the root to receive the crown. It is typically made of titanium and acts as a connecting unit between the crown and root.
Crown
Options range from budget-friendly to more expensive choices. Some veneer options in dental implants look more natural than others. This depends on your price range and whether you’re seeing the treatment for cosmetic or practical reasons.
Dental Implant
Procedure
Dental implants are a 4-part procedure and an additional step that not all patients need.
General
Treatment
Before starting dental implant surgery, your doctor will examine your mouth and its health. This includes x-rays to make sure there are no hidden issues.
Bone
Grafting
(Not Always Necessary) Bone grafting is only necessary before dental implants if you do not have sufficient bone density. In other words, if your jaw is too weak to lift an implant. In this case, you will need a bone graft.
It is a procedure in which your dentist takes bone tissue from a different part of your body and places it in your jaw. After 2-3 months, the graft should fuse with the jawbone and you should be able to continue your procedure.
Dental Implant
Surgery
This step involves placing the root in the jawbone. The entire procedure is carried out inside the mouth, so scarring is not a problem. Your dentist makes a hole in the gum and drills all the way down to the jawbone.
After creating enough space for the root, your dentist places the titanium root and sutures the area. It takes 3 months for the bone to fuse with the root and turn into a single structure. This healing process is very important because it fixes the root permanently.
Placement Of
The Abutment
After the jawbone surgery has healed, you will visit your dentist to place the abutment. The abutment is also made of titanium. To place the abutment in place, your dentist will open the gingiva until the root surface is visible.
When the abutment reaches the root, your dentist closes your gum but does not close the abutment. Instead, the gingiva closes around the abutment. Recovery time is two weeks after this step.
Placing
The Crown
Initially, you will have a temporary crown until your dentist orders a custom-made crown for you. Of course, you can discuss the crown material and the most suitable options with your dentist. After that, your dentist will take measurements of your mouth and send these data to a laboratory. This allows the lab to design the perfect crown for you.
When the abutment reaches the root, your dentist closes your gum but does not close the abutment. Instead, the gingiva closes around the abutment. Recovery time is two weeks after this step.
